Kra-chang Basic of Lai Thai Pattern : Ancient Art Work

Kra-Chang is one of Lai Thai which have a fabric like a Lotus or segment of sugar cane. Kra-Chang is the important because it used to assemble with other patterns, including Thai drama Suit or Thai ancient architecture. Kra-Chang Pattern have many name and many type,as Kra-Chang Fish-tooth, Kra-Chang Bai-Thet, Kra-Chang Taa-O^i etc.

These are architectural ornaments for covering the base of a pillar. They are Symbol of protection and dignity. Their forms are adapted from those of the Kra-chang Pa-tin-yan.

This indented pattern imitates the contours of lotus petals. Using these imitated petals as basic units, we can draw upon them other petals 3 or 5 times as big as the basic ones.


Kra-Chang is a decorative design used for edgings of shelves and along the base of pulpits. These are carved or chased in the shape of upright leaves or lotus petals.
